Unit 32 - The Church Grows | October 5-26

Unit Description: As opposition to the church grew, the church grew along with it. Just as Jesus had said it would, the church began in Jerusalem, had grown into Judea, and was about to expand into Samaria and toward the ends of the earth. First, God needed to help believers understand that as the church grew, they were one church united in Jesus.

Big Picture Question: What is the church? Answer: The church is all Christians everywhere, who gather together in their communities to worship and serve God.

Unit Verse: 1 Corinthians 12:12| For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

SESSION 2: Peter Learned That Jesus Is for All (Acts 10)

SESSION 5: We Are Part of One Church (1 Corinthians 12)

Unit 33 - The Church Goes | November 2-16

Unit Description: Paul had been one of the leaders persecuting the church, but when he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, all of that changed. Paul became a follower of Jesus and would spend the rest of his life on mission, telling others about the One he used to persecute. Jesus can truly save anyone.

Big Picture Question: Who can be saved? Answer: Anyone who trusts in Jesus can be forgiven of their sins and be right with God.

Unit Verse: John 3:17| For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the word might be saved through him.

The Gospel Project At Home:

SESSION 1: Paul Became a Christian (Acts 9)
SESSION 2: Paul Became a Missionary (Acts 13-14)
SESSION 3: Jesus Can Forgive Anyone (2 Corinthians 5)

UNIT 31 - The Church is Opposed | August 31 - September 28

Unit Description: Jesus had promised that His followers would face opposition just as He had, and it didn’t take long for that to happen. The church was opposed by outsiders as it also experienced conflict from within. But just as God had used the opposition of Jesus for good, He would use opposition of the church for good too.

Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus become human? Answer: Jesus became human to obey His father’s plan and rescue sinners.

Unit Verse: Isaiah 53:5 | He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Question 11 -What does God require in the sixth, seventh, and eighth commandments? | October 12

Answer

Sixth, that we do not hurt or hate our neighbor. Seventh, that we live purely and faithfully. Eighth, that we do not take without permission that which belongs to someone else.

Verse

Romans 13:9

For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Prayer

Faithful Shepherd of Our Souls, you created us to live in love and fellowship on the earth, but we fail in that again and again. May your love rule every relationship so that we walk in purity, putting away lust, covetousness, and greed, for your name’s sake. Amen.

Question 12 - What does God require in the ninth and tenth commandments? | October 19

Answer

Ninth, that we do not lie or deceive. Tenth, that we are content, not envying anyone.

Verse

James 2:8

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

Prayer

Lord of All Truth, help us to reflect your goodness in word and deed. You know all things. Nothing is hidden from you. You give good gifts and withhold no good thing from your children. May your truth be on our lips and contentment be in our hearts. Amen.

Question 13 - Can anyone keep the law of God perfectly? | October 26

Answer

Since the fall, no human has been able to keep the law of God perfectly.

Verse

Romans 3:10-12

None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.

All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.

Prayer

Holy God, left to our own devices, we transgress your law at every turn. We have no defense, but must plead guilty before your throne of judgment. Your law condemns us and cuts through our pretensions to righteousness, convincing us that we desperately need a Savior. Amen.

Question 14 - Did God create us unable to keep his law? | November 2

Answer

No, but because of the disobedience of Adam and Eve we are all born in sin and guilt, unable to keep God’s law.

Verse

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

Prayer

Merciful Lord, we are corrupt in our very natures. We are sons and daughters of the first Adam who desire what you forbid. Give us a new nature through new birth in Christ, the second Adam, that we might be able to keep your law in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Question 15 - Since no one can keep the law, what is its purpose? | November 9

Answer

That we may know the holy nature of God, and the sinful nature of our hearts; and thus our need of a Savior.

Verse

Romans 3:20

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
Prayer
Giver of All Good Gifts, your law reveals to us what is just. Though it condemns us, through it we know how great is your holiness and how perfect is your Son. Though we fall short, may we always give you thanks and praise for your law and rejoice that we have a Savior. Amen.
